Speedway has taken place in Hackney, at the one venue of Waterden Road Stadium, since 1935. The initial meeting was on 26th April of that year in front of a crowd in excess of 13000. The first National League match took place under two weeks later on 3rd May when the Hackney Wick Wolves were defeated by near neighbours New Cross 43 - 29. The team remained in the National League for 3 seasons and then joined the National League Division 2. After periods of success which saw them climb the leagues, they became members of the Premier League in 1996 although, ironically, this was to be their last season. They ended with an unfinished match against Oxford when they won 40-32. |  |

| The team were Knockout Cup winners in 1971, 1984 and again in 1988. They were also League Champions in 1938 and 1988. The team has been known, at various times, as the Hawks, the Wolves, the Lions and the Kestrels. | |||||
| Greyhound racing first took place at the Wick, in Londons East End, in 1931 and it quickly became a famous track and hosted famous races including the William Hill Lead and the Ladbrokes Golden Sprint. It was a mainstay of Saturday morning BAGS meetings until it finally closed its doors. The area has been chosen to be redeveloped for the London 2012 Olympics. | |||||
